The introduction of flexible frequency grids and advanced modulation techniques to optical transmission, namely an elastic optical network, requires new routing and spectrum allocation techniques. In this paper, we investigate dynamic two-step routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) methods for elastic optical networks. K-shortest path-based methods as well as spectrum allocation methods are analysed and discussed. Experimental verified of the investigated techniques is provided using simulation software. Based on the obtained experimental results, it can be seen that effectiveness of routing and spectrum allocation methods depend on network topologies. Moreover, performance of shortest path first methods improves considerably when a number of candidate paths increases in a topology with high nodal degree.

A constrained maximum available frequency slots on path based online routing and spectrum allocation for dynamic traffic in elastic optical networks
Khan, Akhtar Nawaz
University of Engineering & Technology, Peshawar, Jalozai Campus
Telecommunications
Elastic optical networking is a potential candidate to support dynamic traffic with heterogeneous data rates and variable bandwidth requirements with the support of the optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technology (OOFDM). During the dynamic network operation, lightpath arrives and departs frequently and the network status updates accordingly. Fixed routing and alternate routing algorithms do not tune according to the current network status which are computed offline. Therefore, offline algorithms greedily use resources with an objective to compute shortest possible paths and results in high blocking probability during dynamic network operation. In this paper, adaptive routing algorithms are proposed for shortest path routing as well as alternate path routing which make routing decision based on the maximum idle frequency slots (FS) available on different paths. The proposed algorithms select an underutilized path between different choices with maximum idle FS and efficiently avoids utilizing a congested path. The proposed routing algorithms are compared with offline routing algorithms as well as an existing adaptive routing algorithm in different network scenarios. It has been shown that the proposed algorithms efficiently improve network performance in terms of FS utilization and blocking probability during dynamic network operation.

The article discusses the specifics of data exchange in the UHF band RFID systems using semi-passive transponders. In addition to the antenna and the RFID chip, there is also an additional source of energy (eg. battery) in the structure of such transponder. The battery may be used to implement additional functions such as the ability to measure physical quantities (eg. temperature, humidity). In this regard, particular attention was paid to the discussion of phases of communication between transponder and RWD associated with additional data (measurement results). An analysis of transmitted data frames has been presented. The preliminary results of the measurements have shown that the number of memory block transmitted from transponder has an impact on the effectiveness of RFID system.

Bandwidth Estimation Using Network Calculus in Practice
Wasielewska, Katarzyna

telecommunications, network performance
An available bandwidth at a link is an unused capacity. Its measuring and/or estimation is not simple in practice. On the other hand, we know that its continuous knowledge is crucial for the operation of almost all networks. Therefore, there is a continuous effort in improving the existing and developing new methods of available bandwidth measurement and/or estimation. This paper deals with these problems. Network calculus terminology allows to express an available bandwidth in terms of a service curve. The service curve is a function representing a service available for a traffic flow which can be measured/estimated in a node as well as at an end-to-end connection of a network. An Internet traffic is highly unpredictable what hinders to a large extent an execution of the tasks mentioned above. This paper draws attention to pitfalls and difficulties with application of the existing network calculus methods of an available bandwidth estimation in a real Internet Service Provider (ISP) network. The results achieved in measurements have been also confirmed in simulations performed as well as by mathematical considerations presented here. They give a new perspective on the outcomes obtained by other authors and on their interpretations.

Establishing the proper values of controller parameters is the most important thing to design in active queue management (AQM) for achieving excellent performance in handling network congestion. For example, the first well known AQM, the random early detection (RED) method, has a lack of proper parameter values to perform under most the network conditions. This paper applies a Nelder-Mead simplex method based on the integral of time-weighted absolute error (ITAE) for a proportional integral (PI) controller using active queue management (AQM). A TCP flow and PI AQM system were analyzed with a control theory approach. A numerical optimization algorithm based on the ITAE index was run with Matlab/Simulink tools to find the controller parameters with PI tuned by Hollot (PI) as initial parameter input. Compared with PI and PI tuned by Ustebay (PIU) via experimental simulation in Network Simulator Version 2 (NS2) in five scenario network conditions, our proposed method was more robust. It provided stable performance to handle congestion in a dynamic network.

The paper discusses actual task of ensuring the quality of services in information networks with fractal traffic. The generalized approach to traffic management and quality of service based on the account of multifractal properties of the network traffic is proposed. To describe the multifractal traffic properties, it is proposed to use the Hurst exponent, the range of generalized Hurst exponent and coefficient of variation. Methods of preventing of network overload in communication node, routing cost calculation and load balancing, which based on fractal properties of traffic are presented. The results of simulation have shown that the joint use of the proposed methods can significantly improve the quality of service network.

Analysis and Comparison of the Fade Phenomenon in the SFN DAB+ Network With Two and Three Transmitters

Single Frequency Networks (SFN) of transmitters are currently used in television and digital broadcasting to effectively cover large areas using minimal spectral resources and using transmitters with much lower power than if the same area were covered using one transmitter. It is therefore a very ecological solution. In this way, much better reception conditions are obtained in large city areas, as the signal reaches the receiving antenna from different directions, reducing the risk of shading. However, in this type of network one should take into account the loss of signal caused by signal interference. Using the appropriate propagation model, it is possible, with appropriate assumptions, to check how the operation of the third transmitter affects the distribution and size of the deepest fades in relation to the network in which there are two transmitters.

The paper presents the analysis of the Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software regarding the ability to be used in audio steganography techniques. Such methods are a relatively new tool for hiding and transmitting crucial information, also being used by hackers. In the following work, the publicly available software dedicated to audio steganography is examined. The aim was to provide the general operating model of the information processing in the steganographic effort. The embedding method was analyzed for each application, providing interesting insights and allowing classifying the methods.
The results prove that it is possible to detect the hidden message within the specific audio file and identify the technique that was used to create it. This may be exploited further during the hacking attack detection and prevention.

Graph coloring; metaheuristics
This paper provides an insight into graph coloring
application of the contemporary heuristic methods. It discusses a
variety of algorithmic solutions for The Graph Coloring Problem
(GCP) and makes recommendations for implementation. The
GCP is the NP-hard problem, which aims at finding the minimum
number of colors for vertices in such a way, that none of two
adjacent vertices are marked with the same color. With the advent
of multicore processing technology, the metaheuristic approach
to solving GCP reemerged as means of discrete optimization. To
explain the phenomenon of these methods, the author makes a
thorough survey of AI-based algorithms for GCP, while pointing
out the main differences between all these techniques.

Performance evaluation of the TFD-capable dynamic QoS assurance of HD video streaming in well-dimensioned network
Chodorek, Agnieszka
Kielce University of Technology
Chodorek, Robert R.
AGH University of Science and Technology
The Traffic Flow Description (TFD) option of the IP protocol is an experimental option, designed by the Authors and described by the IETF’s Internet Draft. This option was intended for signalling for QoS purposes. Knowledge about forthcoming traffic (such as the amount of data that will be transferred in a given period of time) is conveyed in the fields of the option between end-systems. TFD-capable routers on a path (or a multicast tree) between the sender and receiver(s) are able to read this information, process it and use it for bandwidth allocation. If the time horizons are short enough, bandwidth allocation will be performed dynamically. In the paper a performance evaluation of an HD video transmission QoS assured with the use of the TFD option is presented. The analysis was made for a variable number of video streams and a variable number of TCP flows that compete with the videos for the bandwidth of the shared link. Results show that the dynamic bandwidth allocation using the TFD option better assures the QoS of HD video than the classic solution, based on the RSVP protocol.

The paper discusses the problem of video transmission in an IP network. The authors consider the ability of using the most popular video codecs that use both the MPEG2 Transport Stream and Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (DASH). The main emphasis was given to ensuring the quality of service and quality assessment methods, taking into account not only the service- or network provider’s point of view but also the end user’s perspective. Two quality assessment approaches were presented, i.e. objective and subjective methods. The authors presented the results of the quality evaluation for H.264/MPEG-4, H.265/HEVC and VP9 codecs. The objective measurements, proved by statistical analysis of user opinion scores, confirmed the ability of using H.265 and VP9 codecs in both real time and streaming transmissions, while the quality of video streaming over HTTP with the H.264 codec proved inadequate. The authors also presented a connection between the dynamics of network bandwidth changing and MPEG-DASH mechanism operation and their influence on the
quality experienced by users.

In this paper, the capabilities of chromatic dispersion compensation of a photonic crystal fiber with a hexagonal distribution of circular air holes was investigated. The vector finite element method with scattering boundary condition was used to analyze a set of configurations of the fiber in which the distance between air holes’ centers was modified. With this method it was possible to obtain the values of chromatic dispersion and confinement factor in the C fiber band. The best suited configurations were tested in a 160 km optical link with a bit rate of 40 Gbps. The performance was evaluated by measuring the bit error rate for a set of 20 channels with channel spacing of 100 GHz. The simulation results showed that is possible to reach values of chromatic dispersion as low as -850 ps/(nm⋅km) , confinement losses close to 10─3 dB/km and good BER results in the order of 〖10〗^(-17) for a wavelength of 1550 nm.

In the past it was usual to exert a huge effort in the design, simulation, and the real time implementation of the complicated electronic and communication systems, like GNSS receivers. The complexity of the system algorithms combined with the complexity of the available tools created a system that is difficult to track down for debugging or for redesign. So, the simulation and educational tools was different from the prototyping tools. In this paper the parallel search acquisition phase of a GPS receiver was simulated and implemented on FPGA using the same platform and through a graphical programming language. So this paper introduces the fruit of integrating the prototyping tools with the simulation tools as a single platform through which the complicated electronic systems can be simulated and prototyped.

In the new HEVC standard, there are 35 intraframe prediction modes. Therefore, real-time implementations need fast mode pre-selection to reduce the computational load of cost comparison for individual modes. In this paper, a simple technique is proposed to reduce the complexity of the Unified Intra Prediction by decreasing the mode candidate number evaluated in the Rough Mode Decision step. We call this approach hierarchical as we decrease stepwise the angles between the directions of the prediction modes that are tested. Obviously, the fast mode selection results in significant complexity reduction obtained at the cost of choosing a sub-optimum mode related to slightly reduced compression performance. In the paper, it is proposed how to calculate the trade-off between encoder complexity and compression performance, using the ratio of relative coding time reduction and average bitrate increase estimated for constant decoded video quality. Extensive experiments prove that this ratio is much higher for the proposed technique than for many other techniques from the references.

Knowledge about future traffic in backbone optical networks may greatly improve a range of tasks that Communications Service Providers (CSPs) have to face. This work proposes a procedure for long-term traffic forecasting in optical networks. We formulate a long-term traffic forecasting problem as an ordinal classification task. Due to the optical networks’ (and other network technologies’) characteristics, traffic forecasting has been realized by predicting future traffic levels rather than the exact traffic volume. We examine different machine learning (ML) algorithms and compare them with time series algorithms methods. To evaluate the developed ML models, we use a quality metric, which considers the network resource usage. Datasets used during research are based on real traffic patterns presented by Internet Exchange Point in Seattle. Our study shows that ML algorithms employed for long-term traffic forecasting problem obtain high values of quality metrics. Additionally, the final choice of the ML algorithm for the forecasting task should depend on CSPs expectations.

This research began when observations were made on any-to-any-connection services that require QoS (Quality of Service) and tunnel measurements. Tunnel is a technique to interconnect between local networks that are separated through a public network. Research questions found looping caused by traffic issues when sending data in the MPLS service layer-2 tunneling service. Furthermore, this research hypothesis proposes optimizing QoS performance in the application of the SR-TE (Segment Routing-Traffic Engineering) method in the MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) network and analyzing traffic based on MAC addresses using the looping-protection method. This research contributes to optimizing the MPLS network and is a recommended solution for simplifying control-plane operation, especially the SR-TE method and looping-protection in the L2-VPN MPLS service. The purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of MPLS networks, as well as analyze the application of L2-VPN (Layer 2 Virtual Private Network) MPLS networks. The targeted TKT (Technology Readiness Level) is 3rd-Level, which is an analytical and experimental proof of the MPLS tunnel network model on Layer-2 VPN services. The results of the research concluded that testing the SR-TE method is a solution to simplify the process of labeling data traffic that is global labelling, then the looping-protection method is a solution to eliminate looping indications. The QoS obtained has also shown an "excellent" category based on TIPHON standards.

Distance-preserving mappings; Hamming distance; Euclidean distance; Pulse Amplitude Modulation
A trellis coded 4-ary Pulse Amplitude Modulation
(4-PAM) is presented, where the encoding algorith is derived
from Distance Preserving Mapping (DPM) algorithm. In this
work, we modify the DPM algorithm for 4-PAM and obtain a
new construction for mapping binary sequences to permutation
sequences, where the permutation sequences are obtained by
permuting symbols of a 4-PAM constellation. The resulting
codebook of permutation sequences formed this way are termed
mappings. We also present several metrics for assessing the
performance of the mappings from our construction, and we show
that a metric called the Sum of Product of Distances (SOPD) is
the best metric to use when judging the performance of the
mappings. Finally, performance results are presented, where the
mappings from our construction are compared against each other
and also against the conventional mappings in the literature

This paper presents unsupervised change detection method to produce more accurate change map from imbalanced SAR images for the same land cover. This method is based on PSO algorithm for image segmentation to layers which classify by Gabor Wavelet filter and then K-means clustering to generate new change map. Tests are confirming the effectiveness and efficiency by comparison obtained results with the results of the other methods. Integration of PSO with Gabor filter and k-means will providing more and more accuracy to detect a least changing in objects and terrain of SAR image, as well as reduce the processing time.

This paper presents a new OpenFlow controller: the Distributed Active Information Model (DAIM). The DAIM controller was developed to explore the viability of a logically distributed control plane. It is implemented in a distributed way throughout a software-defined network, at the level of the switches. The method enables local process flows, by way of local packet switching, to be controlled by the distributed DAIM controller (as opposed to a centralised OpenFlow controller). The DAIM ecosystem is discussed with some sample code, together with flowcharts of the implemented algorithms. We present implementation details, a testing methodology, and an experimental evaluation. A performance analysis was conducted using the Cbench open benchmarking tool. Comparisons were drawn with respect to throughput and latency. It is concluded that the DAIM controller can handle a high throughput, while keeping the latency relatively low. We believe the results to date are potentially very interesting, especially in light of the fact that a key feature of the DAIM controller is that it is designed to enable the future development of autonomous local flow process and management strategies.

In particular, selected features of the brain consisting of a large number of nerve connections were analyzed, which is why they are a good model for a dense network. In addition, the action of a selected cells from the nervous system (such as neuron, microglia or astrocyte) as well as phenomena observed in it (e.g. neuroplasticity) are presented.

Utilization balancing algorithms for dynamic multicast scheduling problem in EON

Computer science; computer networks
Dynamic data transfer demands are often being a challenge for present communication networks, as they appear in unpredictable time and must be satisfied prior to deadline. Important kind are the multi-target demands occurring in task of replication, backup, database synchronization or file transferring in pear-to-pear networks. Optimal scheduling usually depends of the nature of transport network. In the paper we consider dynamic deadline-driven multicast scheduling problem over elastic optical network. We propose the method for improving link utilization by traffic balance for multicast demands. We present few heuristic algorithms and results of experiments, proving the benefits of balancing concept.

The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has developed a new cellular standard based packet switching allowing high data rate, 100 Mbps in Downlink and 50 Mbps in Uplink, and having the flexibility to be used in different bandwidths ranging from 1.4 MHz up to 20 MHz, this standard is termed LTE (Long Term Evolution). Radio Resource Management (RRM) procedure is one of the key design roles for improving LTE system performance, Packet scheduling is one of the RRM mechanisms and it is responsible for radio resources allocation, However, Scheduling algorithms are not defined in 3GPP specifications. Therefore, it gets a track interests for researchers. In this paper we proposed a new LTE scheduling algorithm and we compared its performances with other well known algorithms such as Proportional Fairness (PF), Modified Largest Weighted Delay First (MLWDF), and Exponential Proportional Fairness (EXPPF) in downlink direction. The simulation results shows that the proposed scheduler satisfies the quality of service (QoS) requirements of the real-time traffic in terms of packet loss ratio (PLR), average throughput and packet delay. This paper also discusses the key issues of scheduling algorithms to be considered in future traffic requirements.

Analysis of Latency-Aware Network Slicing in 5G Packet xHaul Networks
Klinkowski, Mirosław
National Institute of Telecommunications http://orcid.org/0000-0002-8375-2827
Packet-switched xHaul networks are a scalable solution enabling convergent transport of diverse types of radio data flows, such as fronthaul/midhaul/backhaul (FH/MH/BH) flows, between remote sites and a central site (hub) in 5G radio access networks (RANs). Such networks can be realized using the cost-efficient Ethernet technology, which enhanced with time-sensitive networking (TSN) features allows for prioritized transmission of latency-sensitive fronthaul flows. Provisioning of multiple types of 5G services of different service requirements in a shared network, commonly referred to as network slicing, requires adequate handling of transported data flows in order to satisfy particular service/slice requirements. In this work, we investigate two traffic prioritization policies, namely, flow-aware (FA) and latency-aware (LA), in a packet-switched xHaul network supporting slices of different latency requirements. We evaluate the effectiveness of the policies in a network-planning case study, where virtualized radio processing resources allocated at the processing pool (PP) facilities, for two slices related to enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC) services, are subject to optimization. Using numerical experiments, we analyze PP cost savings from applying the LA policy (vs. FA) in various network scenarios. The savings in active PPs reach up to 40%-60% in ring scenarios and 30% in a mesh network, whereas the gains in overall PP cost are up to 20% for the cost values assumed in the analysis.

The implementation of MIMO detection techniques become a difficult missionas the computational complexity increases with the number of
transmitting antenna and constellation size. So designing detection techniques that can recover transmitted signals from SpatialMultiplexing (SM) MIMO with reduced complexity and highperformance is challenging. In this survey, the general model ofMIMO communication system is presented in addition to multipleMIMO Spatial Multiplexing (SM) detection techniques. These detection techniques are divided into different categories, such as linear detection, Non-linear detection and tree-search detection.
Detailed discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of each detection algorithm are introduced. Hardware implementation of Sphere Decoder (SD) algorithm using VHDL/FPGA is also

The paper presents the results of research and analysis of voice data transmission quality in IP packet networks. It analyses mechanisms allowing for the assessment of packet telephony data transmission quality. Possible transmission quality levels and adequate quality metrics, applicable in the recommen- dations of standardisation organisations, as well as suggested limit values conditioning acceptable voice data transmission quality were indicated and discussed. A packet network model was designed and tested, taking into account VoIP architecture supporting various audio codecs used for voice compression. Transmission mechanisms based on audio codecs G.711, G.723, G.726, G.728 and G.729 were investigated. It was shown that for delay-sensitive traffic which fluctuates beyond its nominal rate, selected codecs have an advantage over others and allow for better transmission quality of VoIP traffic with guaranteed bandwidth and delay.

In direct-detection OFDM systems, the nonlinear effects caused by optical modulation and fiber transmission can degrade the system performance severely. In this study, we propose a new nonlinear companding transform to improve the performance of direct detection optical OFDM transmission systems. The demonstration is realized by Monte-Carlo simulation of the intensity modulation and direct-detection DCO-OFDM optical transmission system at 40 Gbps over a 80 km of standard single mode fiber link. The influence of the companding parameters on the performance of system in different nonlinear transmission conditions has been investigated via simulation.

Energy efficiency; Base Station sleeping; Carbon dioxide emissions; heterogeneous networks; mobile networks; next generation networks; Operational Expenditure (OPEX);
Abstract—As more and more Base Stations (BSs) are being deployed by mobile operators to meet the ever increasing data traffic, solutions have to be found to try and reduce BS energy consumption to make the BSs more energy efficient and to reduce the mobile networks’ operational expenditure (OPEX) and carbon dioxide emissions. In this paper, a BS sleeping technology deployable in heterogeneous networks (HetNets) is proposed. The proposed scheme is validated by using extensive OMNeT++/SimuLTE simulations. From the simulations, it is shown that some lightly loaded micro BSs can be put to sleep in a HetNet when the network traffic is very low without compromising the QoS of the mobile network.

Paper presents the results of quality assessment of speech and music signals transmitted via DAB+ system with the use of Single Frequency Network (SFN). The musical signals have been evaluated in overall quality domain. The subjective research was provided with the use of Absolute Category Rating procedure according to the ITU recommendation and the results have been presented as the MOS values for various bit rates. The speech signals were additionally examined with PESQ method. The results have shown that the assumed quality of 4 MOS, for this kind of broadcasting could be achieved at 48 kb/s for speech and 64 kb/s for music. This fact was confirmed by both: subjective and objective research. The comparison between the results obtained for SFN broadcasting with three emitters with single-emitter broadcast has been presented.

Probability of Secrecy Outage in Cognitive Radio Networks over Rician-Fading Channels
Pan, Gaofeng
In Rician-fading scenario, cognitive radio networks (CRNs) with a source (S) in a secondary system transmitting its confidential information to a legitimate destination (D) in the presence of an eavesdropper, are considered in this paper. Under CRNs, the interference power reaching at primary user (PU) is limited by some pre-defined threshold. Secrecy outage not only occurs when the achievable secrecy capacity for S-D link is smaller than a target rate, but also occurs in the case that the interference power at PU is greater than that threshold. Analytical expression of secrecy outage probability has been derived and verified with simulation results. In addition, we have also derived the analytical expression for probability of non-zero secrecy capacity.

The problem of link availability and redundancy of server network devices that need to be on standby 24 hours must be met by banking companies. This problem still needs to be solved by data networks in banking companies that are used as the object of this research. Therefore, this study aims to analyze improving the standby network through simulation to increase network performance using the HSRP (Hot Standby Router Protocol) method as network redundancy to back up the network in the event of a disturbance. From the failover simulation results, when the device is actively down, the backup device succeeds in replacing it and acts as the active device. Network simulations without HSRP are packet loss values of 0%, 189.2 ms delay, 0.19 ms jitter, and 1.6 kbps throughput. In comparison, the implementation results on the network obtained a packet loss value of 0%, 108.6 ms delay, 0.1 ms jitter, and two kbps throughput. The network performance after using HSRP is better based on the simulation and implementation. Process downtime reduces, and network performance increases.
Keywords—Link failover; HSRP (Hot Standby Router Protocol), downtime; throughput; jitter; delay.

On the Comparison of Various Overhead Arrangements for Massive MIMO-OFDM Channel Estimation

wireless communications; MIMO-OFDM; pilot aided channel estimation;
Massive multi input multi output (MIMO) systems incorporate orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology to render high data rate services for future wireless communication applications. The channel estimator (CE) employed by a reliable massive MIMO-OFDM system requires huge amount of overhead in the form of known and null data transmissions, hence limiting the system spectral efficiency (SE). Often, CE design is a tradeoff between SE and system reliability. In this paper, CE with three different overhead arrangements, namely time domain synchronous (TDS), comb type with cyclic prefix (CTCP), $2D$ grid type with cyclic prefix (GTCP) are investigated and a GTCP based CE is proposed which offers both high SE and improved system reliability. The proposed CE uses autocorrelation based denoising threshold for channel impulse response (CIR) estimation and does not require any knowledge of channel statistics (KCS). A $4 \times 16$ MIMO-OFDM system is simulated in a rayleigh fading channel environment with U-shaped doppler spectrum. From the bit error rate (BER) performance results in WiMax SUI-$4$, Advanced Television Technology Center (ATTC) and Brazil A channel environments, it is verified that the proposed CE with GTCP overhead and proposed denoising scheme, indeed improves both SE and system reliability. Hence it is suitable for application in all massive MIMO-OFDM systems.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks constitute a major threat in the current Internet. These cyber‑attacks aim to flood the target system with tailored malicious network traffic overwhelming its service capacity and consequently severely limiting legitimate users from using the service. This paper builds on the state-of-the-art AATAC algorithm (Autonomous Algorithm for Traffic Anomaly Detection) and provides a concept of a dedicated inline DDoS detector capable of real-time monitoring of network traffic and near-real-time anomaly detection.
The inline DDoS detector consists of two main elements: 1) inline probe(s) responsible for link-rate real-time processing and monitoring of network traffic with custom-built packet feature counters, and 2) an analyser that performs the near-real-time statistical analysis of these counters for anomaly detection. These elements communicate asynchronously via the Redis database, facilitating a wide range of deployment scenarios. The inline probes are based on COTS servers and utilise the DPDK framework (Data Plane Development Kit) and parallel packet processing on multiple CPU cores to achieve link rate traffic analysis, including tailored DPI analysis.

Integrating Two Feedback Queuing Discipline into Cognitive Radio Channel Aggregation

cognitive radio; channel aggregation; primary and secondary users; queue discipline.
Queuing regime is one outstanding approach in
improving channel aggregation. If well designed and incorporated
with carefully selected parameters, it enhances the smooth
rollout of fifth/next generation wireless networks. While channel
aggregation is the merging of scattered TV white space (spectrum
holes) into one usable chunk for secondary users (SU). The
queuing regime ensures that these unlicensed users (SUs) traffic/
services are not interrupted permanently (blocked/dropped or
forced to terminate) in the event of the licensed users (primary
user) arrival. However, SUs are not identical in terms of traffic
class and bandwidth consumption hence, they are classified as
real time and non-real time SU respectively. Several of these
strategies have been studied considering queuing regime with a
single feedback queuing discipline. In furtherance to previous
proposed work with single feedback queuing regime, this paper
proposes, develops and compares channel aggregation policies
with two feedback queuing regimes for the different classes of
SUs. The investigation aims at identifying the impacts of the twofeedback
queuing regime on the performance of the secondary
network such that any SU that has not completed its ongoing
service are queued in their respective buffers. The performance is
evaluated through a simulation framework. The results validate
that with a well-designed queuing regime, capacity, access and
other indices are improved with significant decrease in blocking
and forced termination probabilities respectively.

In this paper, it has been shown that the spectrum aliasing and folding effects occur only in the case of non-ideal signal sampling. When the duration of the signal sampling is equal to zero, these effects do not occur at all. In other words, the absolutely necessary condition for their occurrence is just a nonzero value of this time. Periodicity of the sampling process plays a secondary role.

Detailed Consideration of Graphical Calculation of Min-Plus Convolution in Deterministic Network Calculus
Borys, Andrzej Marek

Telecommunications; Traffic analysis
The convolution operation used in deterministic network calculus differs from its counterpart known from the classic systems theory. A reason for this lies in the fact that the former is defined in terms of the so-called min-plus algebra. Therefore, it is oft difficult to realize how it really works. In these cases, its graphical interpretation can be very helpful. This paper is devoted to a topic of construction of the min-plus convolution curve. This is done here in a systematic way to avoid arriving at non-transparent figures that are presented in publications. Contrary to this, our procedure is very transparent and removes shortcomings of constructions known in the literature. Some examples illustrate its usefulness.

A spectrum defragmentation problem in elastic optical networks was considered under the assumption that all connections can be realized in switching nodes. But this assumption is true only when the switching fabric has appropriate combinatorial properties. In this paper, we consider a defragmentation problem in one architecture of wavelength-space-wavelength switching fabrics. First, we discuss the requirements for this switching fabric, below which defragmentation does not always end with success. Then, we propose defragmentation
algorithms and evaluate them by simulation. The results show that proposed algorithms can increase the number of connections realized in the switching fabric and reduce the loss probability.

Saleh’s model of AM/AM and AM/PM conversions is not a model without memory – another proof
Borys, Andrzej Marek

Telecommunications; Wireless systems
The so-called Saleh’s representation for description of the AM/AM and AM/PM conversions, occurring in communication power amplifiers, consists of two expressions that describe them as functions of a real-valued baseband signal modulating the carrier amplitude. It is a common view that this description forms a model without memory. We show here that the above belief is not correct; just the opposite is true. To prove this, we take into account an equivalent description of the Saleh’s model called the quadrature model of bandpass nonlinearities and express it in a form of a nonlinear operator. Afterwards, we check whether this operator possesses a zero memory. To this end, we use an appropriate theorem of the nonlinear systems theory. Finally, as a result of this investigation, we observe that the memory of the above operator is nonzero.

Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) technology has established new concepts for long-range wireless communication, being widely used in the implementation of IoT solutions. Therefore, it is crucial to validate the coverage of the signal and to know the distance at which a LoRAWAN communication system can be connected. This document investigates LoRaWAN technology for cases based on urban environments, so it can be used as a guide for those projects that require predicting the connection distance range of a LoRaWAN link. In addition, it serves as a tool for the reader when it comes to predicting the coverage of Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) technology. Measurements were made in a LoRaWAN network deployed in urban environments, where RSSI measurements were made in the city of Bogotá D.C., Colombia. Experimentally RSSI values were compared with four different propagation models at a frequency of 915 MHz in urban environments. The contribution of this work is an adjustment to widely used prediction models, according to the recommendation of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) ITU-R P.1546, which allows estimating coverage in scenarios with characteristics similar to Bogotá D.C. This allows to know with precision the coverage before implementing the LoRaWAN communications system at 915 MHz. The results of comparing field measurements with fitted propagation models show that the Okumura model is the best predictor of coverage with a minimum error rate.

Heterogeneous network, stochastic geometry, factorial moment, coverage probability
Usually, cellular networks are modeled by placing
each tier (e.g macro, pico and relay nodes) deterministically
on a grid. When calculating the metric performances such
as coverage probability, these networks are idealized for not
considering the interference. Overcoming such limitation by
realistic models is much appreciated. This paper considered two-
tier two-hop cellular network, each tier is consisting of two-hop
relay transmission, relay nodes are relaying the message to the
users that are in the cell edge. In addition, the locations of the
relays, base stations (BSs), and users nodes are modeled as a point
process on the plane to study the two hop downlink performance.
Then, we obtain a tractable model for the k-coverage probability
for the heterogeneous network consisting of the two-tier network.
Stochastic geometry and point process theory have deployed to
investigate the proposed two-hop scheme. The obtained results
demonstrate the effectiveness and analytical tractability to study
the heterogeneous performance.

FSA; flow network; QoS; MBAC; simulation
The paper contains a description and research results of the proposal for distributed QoS extensions for Flow-Based Networking. These QoS extensions let the network accept or reject flows based on current network load and QoS promises for each of the flows. Proposed solution consists of two distributed components, each of them performing in every node, measurement system and access control. The solution could be applied in any network architecture that is able to distinguish flows and routers in this architecture contains flow state table. Proposed approach was verified by simulation, in FSA architecture. Verification was done for six different network structures servicing two traffic classes (MRS, ARS). The results of the simulation tests have confirmed that the average time delay and packet loss ratio in the network with proposed extensions are below thresholds and meet the requirements recommended by ITU-T.

This article discusses the traffic types typically used in industrial networks. The authors propose a number of methods of generating traffic that can be used in modeling traffic sources in the networks under consideration. The proposed traffic models have been developed on the basis of the ON/OFF model. The proposed solutions can be applied to model typical traffic types that are used in industrial systems, such as Time-Triggered (TT) traffic, Audio-Video Bridging (AVB) traffic or Best Effort traffic. The article discusses four traffic models with modifications and shows how the proposed models can be used in modeling different traffic types used in industrial networks.

Deep-fading can decline the quality of the received signal to below threshold, and interrupts the reception-success (generating an outage or time-out). In DVB-T2 (Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial Second Generation) receiver, such interruption can be identified from the displayed-picture. Multiple-antenna is one of techniques to mitigate such problem. This paper presents a multiple-antenna method for receiving the DVB-T2 signal. At any time, one of antennas is selected where the selection action is controlled by the recovered-picture. In case of using two antennas, field-measurement was conducted to collect the real data, later used in the simulation of the proposed algorithm. The result showed its capability to increase the portion of cumulative reception-success duration up to approximately 1.53 times with respect to its equivalent single-antenna.

The Elastic Optical Networks (EON) provide a solution to the massive demand for connections and extremely high data traffic with the Routing Modulation and Spectrum Assignment (RMSA) as a challenge. In previous RMSA research, there was a high blocking probability because the route to be passed by the K-SP method with a deep neural network approach used the First Fit policy, and the modulation problem was solved with Modulation Format Identification (MFI) or BPSK using Deep Reinforcement Learning. The issue might be apparent in spectrum assignment because of the influence of Advanced Reservation (AR) and Resource Periodic Arrangement (RPA), which is a decision block on a connection request path with both idle and active data traffic. The study’s limitation begins with determining the modulation of m = 1 and m = 4, followed by the placement of frequencies, namely 13 with a combination of standard block frequencies 41224–24412, so that the simulation results are less than 0.0199, due to the combination of block frequency slices with spectrum allocation rule techniques.

Cognitive Radio; OFDM; Interference Constraints; Power Allocation; Adaptive Modulation; Bit Loading;
A novel method to improve the performance of the frequency band is cognitive radio that was introduced in 1999. Due to a lot of advantages of the OFDM, adaptive OFDM method, this technique is used in cognitive radio (CR) systems, widely. In adaptive OFDM, transmission rate and power of subcarriers are allocated based on the channel variations to improve the system performance. This paper investigates adaptive resource allocation in the CR systems that are used OFDM technique to transmit data. The aim of this paper is to maximize the achievable transmission rate for the CR system by considering the interference constraint. Although secondary users can be aware form channel information between each other, but in some wireless standards, it is impossible for secondary user to be aware from channel information between itself and a primary user. Therefore, due to practical limitation, statistical interference channel is considered in this paper. This paper introduces a novel suboptimal power allocation algorithm. Also, this paper introduces a novel bit loading algorithm. In the numerical results sections, the performance of our algorithm is compared by optimal and conventional algorithms. Numerical results indicate our algorithm has better performance than conventional algorithms while its complexity is less than optimal algorithm.

Spectrum Aliasing Does not Occur in Case of Ideal Signal Sampling
Borys, Andrzej Marek

signal processing; signal sampling; Kronecker functions
A new model of ideal signal sampling operation is developed in this paper. This model does not use the Dirac comb in an analytical description of sampled signals in the continuous time domain. Instead, it utilizes functions of a continuous time variable, which are introduced in this paper: a basic Kronecker time function and a Kronecker comb (that exploits the first of them). But, a basic principle behind this model remains the same; that is it also a multiplier which multiplies a signal of a continuous time by a comb. Using a concept of a signal object (or utilizing equivalent arguments) presented elsewhere, it has been possible to find a correct expression describing the spectrum of a sampled signal so modelled. Moreover, the analysis of this expression showed that aliases and folding effects cannot occur in the sampled signal spectrum, provided that the signal sampling is performed ideally.

This article investigates and evaluates a handover
exchange scheme between two secondary users (SUs) moving in
different directions across the handover region of neighboring cell
in a cognitive radio network. More specifically, this investigation
compares the performance of SUs in a cellular cognitive radio
network with and without channel exchange scheme. The investigation
shows reduced handover failure, blocking, forced and
access probabilities respectively, for handover exchange scheme
with buffer as compared to exchange scheme without buffer.
It also shows transaction within two cognitive nodes within a
network region. The system setup is evaluated through system

Energy Efficiency (EE) is becoming increasingly important for wireless communications and has caught more attention due to steadily rising energy costs and environmental concerns. Recently, a new network architecture known as Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) has been proposed with the remarkable potential to achieve huge gains in EE with simple linear processing. In this paper, a power allocation algorithm is proposed for EE to achieve the optimal EE in Massive MIMO. Based on the simplified expression, we develop a new algorithm to compute the optimal power allocation algorithm and it has been compared with the existing scheme from the previous literature. An improved water filling algorithm is proposed and embedded in the power allocation algorithm to maximize EE and Spectral Efficiency (SE). The numerical analysis of the simulation results indicates an improvement of 40% in EE and 50% in SE at the downlink transmission, compared to the other existing schemes. Furthermore, the results revealed that SE does not influence the EE enhancement after using the proposed algorithm as the number of Massive MIMO antenna at the Base Station (BS) increases.

Underwater Acoustic Communications (UWAC) is an emerging technology in the field of underwater communications, and it is challenging because of the signal attenuation of the sound waves. Multiple Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO) is introduced in UWAC because of its support in enhancing the data throughput even under the conditions of interference, signal fading, and multipath. The paper presents the concept and analysis of 2× 2 MIMO UWAC systems that uses a 4- QAM spatial modulation scheme thus minimizing the decoding complexity and overcoming the Inter Channel Interference (IChI). Bit Error Rate (BER) investigation is carried out over different link distances under acoustic Line of Sight (LOS). The utilization of Zero Forcing (ZF) and Vertical-Bell Laboratories Layered Space-Time (VBLAST) equalizers, which estimates the transmitted data proves a success of removing Inter Symbol Interference (ISI). The ISI caused due to multipath effect and scattering in UWAC can be reduced by iterative process considered in VBLAST. A study is made on how the distance between the transmitter and the receiver and the Doppler Effect has its impact on the performance of the system.

Providing a Quality of Services (QoS) into current telecommunication networks based on packet technology is a big challenge nowadays. Network operators have to support a number of new services like voice or video which generate new type of traffic. This traffic serviced with QoS in consequence requires access to appropriate network resources. Additionally, new traffic type is mixed with older one, like best-effort. Analysis of these new and mixed traffic types shows that this traffic is self-similar. Network mechanisms used for delivery of quality of services may depend on traffic type especially from the performance point of view. This paper presents a feasibility study done into the effect of traffic type influence on performance of routing algorithm while the routing algorithm is treated as one of the mechanisms to support QoS in the network.

This research proposed a model of Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) scheme which is one of the techniques used in reducing collision and usually prioritized due to its contention window to determine the impact of distance change on the IEEE 802.11 ah standard. The proposed model was analyzed using the Markov Chain approach to determine the effect of distance change on collisions levels while the numerical were simulated using MATLAB. Moreover, the Markov chain solution was used to evaluate parameters such as throughput, energy consumption, and delay. The results showed the increment in RAW slot duration and the distance change for each station can reduce the performance on the standard and the scenario when the RAW slot duration was changed by 50 ms performed better than 100 ms and 250 ms.

Localization is one of the oldest mathematical and technical problems that have been at the forefront of research and development for decades. In a wireless sensor network (WSN), nodes are not able to recognize their position. To solve this problem, studies have been done on algorithms to achieve accurate estimation of nodes in WSNs. In this paper, we present an improvement of a localization algorithm namely Gaussian mixture semi-definite programming (GM-SDP-2). GMSDP is based on the received signal strength (RSS) to achieve a maximum likelihood location estimator. The improvement lies in the placement of anchors through the Fuzzy C-Means clustering method where the cluster centers represent the anchors' positions. The simulation of the algorithm is done in Matlab and is based on two evaluation metrics, namely normalized root-mean-squared error (RMSE) and cumulative distribution function (CDF). Simulation results show that our improved algorithm achieves better performance compared to those using
a predetermined placement of anchors.

Telecommunications; Teaching of humanitarian engineering concepts; curricula and syllabi of telecommunications; implementations within the Polish Qualifications Framework for higher education system in Poland
This paper describes a “distributed method” of introducing the humanitarian engineering principles and concepts to the curriculum of telecommunications at a maritime university. That is by modifying appropriately the syllabi of the telecommunications subjects taught. The propositions made in this area are illustrated by the concrete examples taken from the current Polish Qualifications Framework for the higher education system in Poland. And, for clarity and consistency of presentation, fundamentals and principles as well as a basic terminology and features of this Framework are also highlighted here shortly. Moreover, it has been shown that the approach presented in this paper is more useful compared to a method based on organization of some special courses for students on the humanitarian engineering, in particular when this regards a maritime university.

The considered problem covers routing and spectrum allocation problem (RSA problem) in Elastic Optical Networks while maintaining the spectrum continuity constraints, non-overlapping spectra constraints for adjacent connections on individual links of the network and spectrum contiguity constraints of the connection. In this article the modified version of the First Fit spectrum slot allocation policy for Fixed Alternate Routing in flexible optical networks has been proposed. The Fixed Alternate Routing with proposed spectrum allocation policy rejects fewer requests, provides less bandwidth blocking probability and less spectrum fragmentation than Fixed Alternate Routing with well-known First Fit and Exact Fit spectrum allocation policies. However, the cost of improving these parameters is a higher computational complexity of the proposed allocation policy.

Low-delay sparse excitation and mixed excitation CELP. Sparse
excitation is based on MP-MLQ and multilayer models. Mixed

standard. As opposed to G.728 LD-CELP coder, mixed excitation
codebook consists of pseudorandom vectors and sequences
obtained with Long-Term Prediction (LTP). Variable rate coding
consists in maximizing vector dimension while keeping the

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is seen as the most promising networking technology today. The spread of a new technology depends on the acceptance of the engineers implementing the networks. Typically, when engineers start the conceptualization of new network devices that work with a new paradigm, and that should provide expected business values, they must identify and utilize technical enablers for the defined business use cases. This paper tries to summarize essential SDN applications and defines the technical enablers for advanced and efficient SDN networking. To this end, we identify the core technical mechanisms, expecting to provide a useful analysis for the design of new SDN networks.

Telecommunications; Free-space optical communications
The performance of free-space optical (FSO) communications that using an optical amplifier (OA) in the scheme of an amplify-received (AR)-relaying has a major drawback in the detection of input signal quality under the effects of turbulence. As an OA is based on a fiber-detection (FD) method to receive and delivers a signal at the amplification process stage, there is an opportunity to implement an optical filter to improve the quality of the input signal. In this paper, as the continuation of previous work on improvement of direct-detection, the optical filter is applied on the AR-relaying of optical signal detection, implementing an OA in the receiver. The novelty proposed in this work is the improvement of FD method where the OF is designed as the integration of cone reflector, pinhole and multi-mode fiber with an OA. The optical filter produces an optical signal, the input of the OA, which minimizes the effects of turbulence, background noise and the fluctuation of the signal spectral. Thus, OA in AR-relaying produces signal output with high power and rise up below threshold level. Additionally, an OF with a lower pinhole diameter produces the best quality of the signal spectral to be delivered into an EDFA. Through this implementation, the performance of optical relaying network on FSO can be significantly improved.

Communication - Fiber optic equalization - Electrical Equalization
Abstract—Nonlinearities in optical fibers deteriorate system performances and become a major performance-limiting issue. This article aims to investigate the compensation of nonlinear distortions in optical communication systems based on different wavelength propagations over few-mode fiber (FMF). The study adopted Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) based on decision feedback equalizer (DFE). Various transmission wavelength of the FMF system is applied to mitigate the attenuation effect on the system. In this paper, different wavelengths (780, 850 and 1550 nm) are used in SDM. Extensive simulation is performed to assess the attenuation and Bit Error Rate (BER) in each case. The results show that the wavelength of 1550 nm produces higher power and less attenuation in the transmission. Furthermore, this wavelength produces the best distance with less BER compared to 780 nm and 850 nm wavelengths. Moreover, the validations show improvement in BER and eye diagram.

The major difference between a continuous mode optical regenerator (CMOR) and a burst mode optical regenerator (BMOR) is that a BMOR is capable of handling large variations in the input power which makes it useful in optical packet switched and optical burst switched networks. This is due to the optical limiting amplifier (OLA) present in the BMOR. Using computer modelling, the impact of using different OLA non-linear transfer functions on the output bit error rate of a system consisting of a cascade of 2R BMORs has been investigated. The effect of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise introduced in the inter-regenerator links has also been taken into consideration.
